9:53 am - Funerals.
I dislike funerals. Nuff said.

*is dressed in black from head to toe*

Well the funeral/memorial service took place on Saturday, but today is the actual burial of the urn where only the closest relatives will be present.

I'm leaving on Saturday morning. 36 hours of traveling... fun :P Hopefully all my planes will be on time (there's four altogether). I should arrive in Buffalo at 12:30am on Sunday then. Obviously I will have to check into a hotel for the night. Oh well.

I still haven't started packing... :/ And I should get my hair cut and dyed before I go. Hrmh. And wash tons of laundry. I don't want to pack any dirty clothes.

I prolly won't update in the next couple of days so if all goes well, my next update will come from Buffalo. :)

5:54 am - Helsinki
I will be flying down to Helsinki in two hours; today will be dedicated to shopping, and tomorrow I will visit the US Embassy for my visa interview. I'm slightly nervous as this is the first time I'm traveling alone, and also because this is my first flight alone. My last (and only) flight so far has been the trip to Bulgaria with Henkka four years ago. I'm terribly afraid of planes. :/

On a sadder note, however, my grandfather passed away early Tuesday morning. So yesterday was a sad and hectic day: we visited my grandmother, bought me a suitcase and packed it in the middle of the night, etc. I will be taking my laptop with me and the hotel has a wlan connection so I can keep in touch with everyone.

Well, that's mostly what I've been up to lately. I'll be updating more frequently now since my summer job ended last week. After this trip I can just relax and take care of everything before leaving for Buffalo around the 21st of August.

I'll go now since it's so annoying to write on Henkka's computer; the i-button doesn't work properly. See ya soon, with pictures I hope ^^

2:57 pm - Long time no see
I've been really busy this summer. I managed to get a summer job as a cleaner and it's been full-time work from Monday to Friday, sometimes even on Saturdays (thankfully only 3,75 hours in the morning). This is my first job ever, so it was really frightening and exciting in the beginning. Now it's become a routine. Only three more weeks...

On the 29th I will be traveling to Helsinki for my visa interview. I'll spend two days there because I've never been to Helsinki and I want to explore it a bit. Can you believe it?? It's the capital of Finland and I've never been there... *shame*

And... *drumroll*

On the 21st, or the 22nd of August, I will be traveling to Buffalo. ^^ It's all official now.

I was wondering, though, can you trust places like ? I'm looking for plane tickets from New York to Buffalo and they're ridiculously cheap, cheaper than bus or train tickets. Traveling by plane would be a lot nicer than spending 10 hours on a train/bus...

In any case, I HAVE to be on campus by the 23rd. The dorms for international students open on the 22nd and the orientation week starts on the 24th.

I'm really excited. ^^ I hope all goes well. I've never traveled alone... and I've never been on international airports. Fortunately the flight from Helsinki to New York has only one layover. I haven't booked the tickets yet because I have to figure out just how many hours I'll have to spend at the airport in NY (passports, visas, etc), which airport it will be, and when I will arrive in Buffalo and check into a hotel there (the dorms close at 6pm and I'll never make it on time).

So yeah. That's mostly what I've been up to lately. I've been reading your LJs daily but I haven't had the time to comment, sorry. :( But it looks like most of you are having a great summer, so keep it up folks :)

10:41 am - July, I damn you!!!
Not only am I missing Morning Musume in the US in July, but VAMPS (i.e. Hyde's band) is also performing there in July!!!!

And I'm not going to the US until mid-August!!

*bangs head on wall*

And also, where's that global warming thing when you need it? It's April and there's still 10cm of snow on the ground!!

10:47 pm - March madness
Wanna know why I hate March?

Because the nights and days are clear, the temperature drops. Which means that during the night and in the morning it's -20C, and during the day the temp rises to zero (because of the sun). Which, in turn, means that if I wear long underpants in the morning, I'll be sweating in the daytime. >8( I don't like dressing/removing clothing in public bathrooms...

Blaaaaahhh I want it to be summer already :(( I hate winter!!! I want it to be warm and sunny so all I have to do is put on my shoes when I walk out the door, and not spend five minutes figuring out what I should wear so I wouldn't freeze/be too hot.

Now I guess I should go to bed... have to wake up at 5:30 tomorrow. Blah to that too!

7:00 am - Uff.
There's nothing nicer than waking up at 5am because of horrible cramps... thank goodness for painkillers. Oh well, I would've had to wake up at 5:45 anyway.

Thus, I'm bored and I have time to kill this morning, which is unusual. So I thought I'd update.

Teacher training ends next week (WOHOO!!!). I can honestly say that this has been the most stressful five months in my life. I'm so glad it's over! There are no words to describe this relief.

My Thesis should go into print in April/May. So that's nice.

My application was sent to Buffalo two weeks ago, so I'm expecting to hear from them sometime during the next month. Could be May, though. I'll be in a hurry to get everything in order... especially the visa.

Currently I'm desperately trying to find a summer job. No luck so far. I doubt whether I'll even get a job since the economy is in such a bad shape. Blahh. Just my luck. I'll graduate in the midst of a huge depression...

Other than that, absolutely nothing has been going on in my life. Just school, school, and school. But soon that'll be over.

I'm feeling happy this morning ^^ Can you tell?
(maybe it's just the euphoria from the painkillers, and because it's so sunny outside, but oh well)

10:36 pm - Ahh shit!!
Morning Musume will perform at Anime Expo in the US in July... crap! Why July and not August when I'd probably be there :((

Oh and you all know about the awful plane accident in Buffalo, right? Well, that's where I'll be going... hmmh.

Although I think that it would be more likely to win the lottery than to have a plane accident occur twice a year in the same place...

And yay it's weekend. Henkka started making us this coffin-type thingie where we can keep our clothes, so that they're not all over the bedroom floor. (what do you call those things anyway?? it looks like a coffin, lol, it's big enough for me to go lie in it) It's got a cover, too, so hopefully the clothes will be free of cat hair... I've been wanting something like this for ages now, and we figured it would be cheaper to build our own than to buy two baskets or two similar, smaller "coffins".

Hmm... I just realized I've got nothing exciting to look forward to, even though it's the weekend. Hrmh. Well of course everyone's all hyped up about Valentine's Day, but because the literal Finnish translation for it is "Friends' Day", Henkka thinks it's for friends only and it doesn't have a romantic purpose.

Oh well! I'll buy something sweet for myself, then. I need something sweet, actually; our favorite chips were on sale (1 euro per bag) so now we have six bags of chips... uggh.

My life atm is pretty boring too. Henkka is on holiday and we won't be getting any money until April. Oh fun. I wonder how we're going to pay our bills...

However, I'm in surprisingly good spirits. At the moment. Teacher training is going well and keeping me busy, studying Russian is neat, and I'm _this_ close to correcting the last spelling mistakes/other minor mistakes in my Thesis. I'll probably have to delete something because it's over a hundred pages, but I'm not sure yet... the teacher promised to be in touch later this week. But today she said it's pretty much done, and I needn't worry, and yesterday she kicked me out of the Thesis Workshop course because there's no point in me attending it if I've already done my Thesis (even though it's an obligatory course)... I always just sit there for three hours twiddling my thumbs and yawning.

BUT. I don't want to jinx myself and/or celebrate too early.

So today I heard some rumors that some fellow students at uni are reeeeeally bitter and jealous that I've accomplished so much and they still haven't done anything. WELL BOHOO. It's all about their own schedule, dedication and motivation. I didn't have any work or courses last summer and fall, so I devoted all that time to my Thesis. I knew I was my own expert and I knew what I wanted to do and what I wanted to accomplish and what I wanted my paper to look like, so I sat down and wrote it, and I spent hundreds of hours in total doing it (collecting and analyzing the data, reading theory books, writing down notes, REwriting notes, translating, listening, AND doing the actual writing) that if anyone thinks I "must have gotten out easy" or other such shit, I'm fucking going to smack them on the head. I spent so many sleepless night sitting here writing that I lost count, and had to take sedatives almost every night because my mind was still working on overdrive when I tried to fall asleep at 5am.

So all I can say is: CHATÖÖÖÖÖ.

(don't worry if you don't get it, heh)

Well, I've got Russian homework to do (again), so I'll go. :)

11:02 pm - An odd piece of poetry
Lol I found a really nice old Finnish saying:

- Kokoo kokoon koko kokko, Kokko.
- Koko kokkoko?
- Koko kokko.
Kokko kokosi kokoon koko kokon.

A loose translation:

- Build up the entire bonfire, Kokko.
- The whole bonfire?
- The whole bonfire.
Kokko built up the entire bonfire.

Yep yep. Pronunciation is important. :P

collect:imperative together whole bonfire [name]
- Kokoo kokoon koko kokko, Kokko.
whole bonfire also
- Koko kokkoko?
whole bonfire
- Koko kokko.
[name] collect:past together whole bonfire:genitive
Kokko kokosi kokoon koko kokon.

Wow that was hard to translate actually... O.o Kinda impossible, really. Depends on how you look at the whole building/putting up/gathering process, and whether the bonfire already exists or not... O.o

You can probably tell that I'm bored... as if I didn't have stuff to do. Russian homework, here I come!

1:06 pm - King Alcohol indeed
Lately I've been wondering why I have surrounded myself with selfish people all my life; people who ultimately end up using me and taking advantage of my kindness and inability to say 'no'. Especially my school friends have always been (and sadly, still are) like that. I'm always the one who does and worries the most.

Yesterday I noticed something else about those people, too: they're ALL alcoholics. In one way or another. (except my family)

This morning I was woken up at 10am when our drunk next-door neighbor was playing the guitar and singing in his whisky-baritone voice which is just awful.

I came to the solution that even though I rarely use alcohol myself (for the past six months, I've been drinking only once a month), it and drunk people are still ruining my life.

Seriously. My best friend is a drunk. My other friend only contacts me when she wants something/wants to go drinking, cos she's got no one else to go with. And if I don't drink myself, I end up driving HER and her car around. I always end up being the sober driver when I'm strong enough to say 'no' to drinking. WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH THAT????

On top of it all, Henkka drinks almost nightly, and it's only going to get worse because now he was laid off from work for six weeks, starting February 9th.
Meanwhile, I'm in teacher training from 8am to 6pm almost every day. I wonder if he's going to help me with household chores and let me go to bed early?

Why does alcohol turn people into idiots and ruins so many lives???

I'm never drinking again. I'm done with that shit. kthxbai

10:52 pm - New year's and all
We took Topi to the vet today, to be castrated. Poor thing. I've been cleaning up his pee and vomit from the floor all evening. :I He and Milla have been fighting a lot recently, mainly because Topi has been trying to hump on her. He's been very noisy, too, constantly yelling and moaning... I was beginning to think that maybe he's a hermaphrodite or something, he was acting just like a female cat in heat, lol.
(don't get me wrong, he's male alright; just look at the size of his *cough*... or well, at least the size of his "what he used to have"...)
He's finally asleep now, after roaming the floors for about three hours...

I've gotten addicted to Dynasty now. I watched all of the episodes about ten years ago when they were showing reruns, but now they've started releasing them on DVD here and I got season 1 for Christmas. It ended in such a cliffhanger that I had to go and spend 40 euros on season 2. Lol. But that's it then, they haven't released season 3 yet... *sigh* I can't afford to buy Dallas on Amazon, much less Dynasty, although they're both cheaper on Amazon than they are here (I saw some Dallas boxes with Swedish covers here recently and they cost 70 euros per season!!!). But the shipping rates on Amazon are ridiculous... I'll buy them all once I get to the States.

I wonder why I love 80's TV shows so much, lol. I think the ones today are such crap. Well, the 80's shows aren't THAT good either I guess, but I like the nostalgia... and the glamour associated with the families on Dallas and Dynasty. *shrugs* Heh.

I haven't been writing my Thesis much during the break, mainly because well, I needed a break. I started again today. Let me just say that I effing loathe it. LOATHE. I'm so sick of it!!! I just want the whole thing to be over and done with, and once I'm done with it, I won't listen to Japanese music for... at least a month!!

I think I've stated that I don't make new year's resolutions, mainly because I (and virtually everyone else) never keeps them. Well, now I have two:

-get my Master's Thesis done
-get my ass to Buffalo
-get my teacher training done
-get a summer job

Okay that's four. And a lot of getting, lol.

I'll also try my damndest to quit smoking after I'm done with the Thesis & teacher training stress, because 1) I don't think I'll be able to smoke as freely in the dorms in the States and 2) the price of cigarettes rose today, by 50 cents!! That's six euros a pack!!! A large pack, but anyway. Sheeeesh.
So I think I'll for once do what the greedy government wants me to do (i.e. quit smoking because it's oh-so-bad) and thus stop bringing in money as cigarette taxes, which constitute to over 50% of the price. So hah!! We'll see how we get through this recession, then!
Seriously, if everybody suddenly quit smoking because it's so unhealthy, the state would go bankrupt.

So, I think I'll continue working on my Thesis next year, then, and continue watching Dynasty for the rest of this year... bye.

11:21 pm - Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you all!! :) I won't be able to post tomorrow, so I'm wishing everyone a merry Christmas now.

We put up the tree today (you can guess what the cats thought of it...) and the ham is in the oven. Tomorrow we'll go visit Henkka's parents in Kemi, and then my parents, and go to the graveyard etc. Then we'll just relax at home, drink red wine and eat lots of chocolate. Fun. :)

I hope everyone else has a good time too :)

11:40 pm - Year In Review
I got my laptop back!!!! It works now, yay. It came without a battery, though, which can only mean one thing -- that I will be getting a new one. It should be sent to me later this week, so double yay!!!

Anyways, here's a meme I snagged from Dev:

Go to your archives/calendar, take the first post you made each month and write the first line of each in your post. This is your year in review.

January - Resolutions
February - The kitty's asleep so I can type in peace for once
March - Easter
April - Beh
May - Joys of HTML
June - Just a quick update
July - Moving & name day
August - New home
September - Topi
October - A meme stolen from Shelly
November - Snow!
December - umm, this post right here.

This quite effectively sums up my year. Two cats and a new home. Lol.

I'm busy with teacher training again... tomorrow I have to teach high school kids. Ugh. I like middle schoolers much more...

There was a living, breathing mouse in our apartment last night O.o I heard it squeaking when Topi carried it around in his mouth and immediately thought "wtf, our fake mice don't make noise like that!!" Then it tried to hide in our closet, at which point I started to panic (if you'd see the messy state of our closet you'd agree with me that if a small mouse ever got in there, it would be lost in there forever).

In the end, we managed to get it back outside. I don't know how it got here in the first place. It probably came with the Christmas decorations box which I carried inside on Sunday... we keep it in our warehouse, so there are probably mice there.

It was fun for the cats, though...

1:30 pm - HP laptops are teh shit
The wlan-card in my laptop died all of the sudden on Monday. Combined with the fact that the battery is 100% destroyed and died all of the sudden too, it means that the motherboard is broken somehow --> which means extended warranty and two weeks without a laptop for poor moi.

NEVER BUY AN HP LAPTOP. Mari got an extended warranty on hers too because guess what was broken?? The motherboard!

I'm writing this on my laptop which is hooked on the phone cable and shit, but now I'll try reinstalling Windows and format this computer (which, according to the guy at HP support, most likely won't fix the problem but it has to be done anyway) and lose all of my precious music and videos. I burnt the most important stuff onto a DVD but still... *tear*

I like Japanese christmas songs. :}

The second half of my teacher training started on Friday, so that will keep me busy too. So I probably won't be updating in a while.

Today will be spent reinstalling the laptop, cleaning and putting up Christmas decorations (hopefully the cats won't destroy them!!), and watching the Big Brother final. I don't care who wins it; the four people left are so boring I haven't watched BB at all this week... that is quite an accomplishment for me.

Anyways, see ya again soon, hopefully :)

1:41 am - Snow!
It snowed here today!! Loooots of snow!! Yay! Although the weather was terrible otherwise, since it snowed so heavily and the wind was horrid, but anyway. Yaaay. Would've been more fun if Henkka had changed winter tyres into our car in time, though :( I was scared as hell whether he'd make it back from work safely. The roads were really bad. He did steer off the road on the exit ramp from the highway, and he nudged the front of the car into something but the speed was so slow at that point that nothing happened. He even managed to get the car back on the road by himself, lol. Even with all that snow that had piled up on the sides of the road.

I don't celebrate Halloween, so you get no happy Halloween wishes from me. :P I actually rather dislike the fact how they're trying to force us into celebrating it here, with stores full of Halloween stuff. I don't see the point... buying pumpkins and costumes for one day and then throwing it away. Why is Halloween celebrated anyway? I have no idea. O.o

I'm not dissing people who do celebrate it and who have a long tradition of celebrating it! Don't get me wrong. I just don't get why we should celebrate it HERE when we don't even know what the whole thing is about O.o
So I'm boycotting the whole thing. Heh.

Here kids go trick 'n treating on Easter. Once a year should be enough, imho...

Hmh. Nothing much is happening... things aren't progressing, not on the Buffalo front or on the Thesis front at the moment, since I have to wait for feedback.

Gahh I hate it how I haven't been able to sit with my legs crossed since the accident in August :( It twists the ankle in a bad way and it doesn't feel nice. Otherwise my ankle is back to normal, I guess. Some moves are still unimaginable when I exercise, but I'll live. ;) And walking on bumpy grounds hurts for some reason... I don't even know where it hurts exactly, but it hurts. Hmmh.

We watched a really good war movie today! I told Henkka to rent whatever he wanted (he always wants to watch war movies) and I hate those, so we started watching it and I was like blah, and I didn't even plan on watching it the whole way through. It's called... *checks* "Lorelei: The Witch of the Pacific Ocean" in English. First, I was glad about the fact that it was Japanese (and partly English) and then, I noticed that the movie had an actual plot, which was interesting, and the characters were interesting too!! It wasn't just BOOMCRASH GUNS FIRE BLOOD BODIES EXPLOSIONS BOOM.

(that's my concept of war movies, lol)

So then naturally Henkka didn't like the movie at all and I was like "yay this is the best war movie I've ever seen!!!"

Bleh I guess I'll watch Big Brother for a while now and then go to bed... they're having an Oktoberfest party this time. Lolz. And they got some showering tan spray booth into the house today, so they all look absolutely horrid with their fake tans. They look too... fake. And orange. And they sprayed on way too much of it. It looks awful, especially when they talk because their teeth are so white...
I'd like to try some really fair fake tan sprays/lotions, because I'm so pale I look sick, but my skin is so dry that the tan probably would not stick too well and would end up looking choppy. Then I'd look even more sick :D
I tried some "slowly and fairly self-tanning day cream" once and after I'd used it for a week, I went to see my parents and my dad looked at me and started yelling "what the hell happened to your face, do you have cancer?" because my skin was orange in some places and pale in others. Lol.

Okay I always end up babbling!! I'll go now!

3:57 am - Buffalooooh
So it looks like I'm going to Buffalo next fall! My university nominated me to go there. Sadly, I'm going alone, even though there were two open exchange slots... I don't mind being the possible sole Finn while in Buffalo, but it would have been nice if I could've gone there at the same time with another student, on the same flights etc. But oh well! Yay!! Now I just need to fill in more paperwork and Buffalo Uni will have to formally accept me to study there. Then it will be 100% certain; now it's only about 90% certain, I think.

I hope I'm not jinxing myself by talking about this though O.o

Anyways, not much else is going on. I'm pretending to be busy, even though I'm on half-term break. Lol. Well I have been working on my Seminar quite a lot. And watching Big Brother TOO MUCH. Right now all of the residents are pissed-drunk and singing Singstar. Oh god... :o This week they got an exchange resident from the Big Brother house in South Africa, and one of our residents went there for a week. Cool!! The Finnish BB has never done this before. The new guy is really cool and interesting, too. He's definitely cheering things up!

I offered Milla a carrot today and damn, I wish I could've had her reaction on tape! The disgusted look on her face was priceless! It's strange that she reacted so strongly to the smell of a carrot when cats generally hate citrus fruit the most. Well, Milla doesn't like them much either, she always makes a disgusted face and runs away when I offer her an orange. xD But the smell of the carrot made her puke!! Well not quite, but a tiny bit of saliva came out anyway. She looked exactly like those people who pretend to be disgusted by something and pretend to start puking. xD

Topi, on the other hand, would've happily eaten the carrot if I had let him... *rolls eyes* He likes oranges, too. And beer. He always licks at the bottle noses. Little alcoholic cat...

Okay I'll go to bed now, I swear. No more BB for me tonight.
